Weekend Coffee Share – clean up at the new gardening plot

Welcome to the weekend coffee share! Can I get you a cup of coffee? How are things in your corner of the world? Like last week we’ve had temperatures in the mid 60’s, and partly cloudy all week. It’s been perfect if you ask me! I’ve been doing a lot of clean up at my new gardening plot. I ordered an old fashion lawn mower (that you push in front of you, manual power only,) and an electric trimmer last week. While I waited for them to arrive I started to clean out the existing garden and flower beds by hand. I transferred some bell-pepper and eggplants from my balcony to the garden plot. I also picked up more organic soil for my fall garden. One of my friends that has a car wanted to see my garden-to-be and offered to help me transport some soil, I’m very grateful for that. (Made me think of that it’s actually three years ago since I decided to see if I could live without a car, and this was the first time I wished I had a car!)

Yesterday I got to use the trimmer and lawn mower for the first time, and it made a huge difference. The trimmer ran out of battery after a while, so I am going to continue trimming today. Overall I am very happy with the trimmer and the lawn mower. I don’t plan on having a lot of lawn to mow in the future.

My plan is the expand the garden a little bit every year (knowing me it may be more than a little bit every year.) I am going to put the existing raised beds to great use, and add more. In the spring I am also planning on doing some in-ground gardening. There is room for both.

There are some established berry bushes; black currant and raspberry. They need some TLC, but I am thinking that within a year, or two, they will produce a lot of berries. I am adding four more black currant bushes (two different varieties,) four red currant (also two different varieties,) and two gooseberry bushes today. 

Under these covers there are berry bushes waiting to be planted in the ground later today.

Next week I’m going to plant some strawberries and rhubarbs. The bushes are going to be on the edge to the neighbouring gardening lot, and the strawberries and rhubarbs are going into separate raised beds. It is all very exciting! I’ve been working hard this week and I feel some muscles I forgot that I had. It’s all good. 

At the outskirts of the garden society’s gardening plots, there are some pastures with super cute miniature horses. My daughter loves visiting them. To the point that one of the foals runs up as soon as she sees her.

      Miniature Horses has to be under 3ft tall to be considered Miniature Horses. I’ve never owned one myself, but they are indeed very special.

  3. The horse is sooo cute! I’m glad that your garden is going so well, Maria. You are so good with plants. That mower is what I call a Reel Mower because of the twisted blade. They are old technology but still very good mowers that need no gas. The 60s sound nice and cool, it’s been in the low 100s in Las Vegas. Be well! ❤️🇸🇪

    1. Yes, I think the horse is adorable to say the least 🙂
      The mower is great. I let one of my neighbours try it on her plot today. I think she’s going to get one herself.

      1. A great weekend regardless of a couple of bumps in the road. It’s 73 in my house and 97 outside just now but more humid than usual because of a thunderstorm this morning. Rain!!! ❤️

    The garden looks beautiful and a nice piece of land to work with. That’s wonderful that it has some things established and then you can add your own stuff! All the berry bushes make my mouth water for scrumptious berries, yum!! I didn’t think about not having a car, so it’s great you have friends that can help you out from time to time. The mini baby is ADORABLE!! How cool to have them around nearby! ❤️🐴🤠 What a fun post, I’m so happy you get to play in real dirt again in the Earth, and with your green thumb I know veggies will abound in no time! 💖

    1. Thank you so much! It makes me very happy, and yes, the horses makes my beautiful daughter wanna join me more often.
      She doesn’t know it yet, but one of her birthday gifts next week will be to pick out a fruit tree at a local garden center to plant. I already know she wants to have a cherry tree, so my guess is that is what she’s going to pick.

  12. So this is like a community garden plot? Our small town has a community garden, but the plots are about the size of your little raised gardens! OK, some people have two or three of them, but you seem to have a lot of room, which is great. That miniature horse looks so cute! I’m sure your daughter misses being around horses (and I’m sure you miss it as well).

    1. Kind of, it’s a garden society that are leasing land, and then leasing out gardening plots. The gardening society is more than 100 years old. The plots are big, plenty of space to grow. Its not so often that one os available, so I am very grateful that I got one.
